They are subsequently intercepted by Lord Asriel (Daniel Craig), the wealthy benefactor of an academy that is secretly dedicated to studying the polarity that binds the world together, which would allow someone with the appropriate skill to manipulate the metal or energy of one element to affect another. Luckily for Lord Asriel, he is capable of manipulating ice, which gives him the upper hand in the skirmish with the kidnappers, and he takes Lyra, Roger, and Lee to his home in Oxford in order to question her. However, when the kidnappers realize that the girls are keeping up with the kidnapper's payment plan, they turn against Lord Asriel and the girls. In a struggle with the abductor, Lee is thrown out of the window and dies. Lyra, Roger, and Lord Asriel manage to rescue the child soldier, but Lee's body is eventually recovered at the bottom of the river and it is discovered that the kidnappers have poisoned him with a deadly virus.
