If you're looking for a book that presents Photoshop in an easy-to-understand way, don't miss the several books in _The Photoshop Book of Secrets._ I can't imagine getting around to learning how to use any application without first reading this book. ## Digital Photography If you're interested in creating or manipulating digital photos, then you'll want to have access to a camera that saves its images on removable media. I recommend the Canon EOS Rebel T1i. Its largest capacity, removable memory card is the 16GB model and is plenty to capture the images you'll need for this book. But if you want to go even bigger, then there's a 32GB version of this card in the new Canon EOS Rebel T1i. You can also go digital with your photos by using a camera that captures files that you transfer to a computer, like a digital camera, DSLR (or camcorder), or phone camera. After you transfer the images to a computer, you can use software to enhance them (pardon the pun), such as Adobe Photoshop Elements or Photoshop. But to get started using Elements, you'll want a computer system that can handle the software's basic functions, like creating and saving projects and viewing images. ## The Basics of Photoshop Photoshop's overall layout looks like Figure 1-5, but its workspace is called the _canvas_ and it changes according to the screen size, whether you're viewing the documents full-screen or in a window. In the lower left, where the Command and View options usually reside, you see the Camera Roll browser. Figure 1-5. For most of us, the sunshine and fresh air would make our lives a lot easier. But, for bats that are in a cave during the day, that is the way their lives have been since time began. Bats (which include the familiar common bat and the four-winged flying-fox) have always been a source of food for humans. Some are used for their meat while others provide their droppings as fertilizer. Because of this, more and more Bats are being killed each year. Fortunately, with some changes in the laws, we are starting to help Bats as they cope with their changing environment. What do Bats do to survive? Bats have a different survival strategy than humans. They will awake to go out to hunt and forage during the day. Their large eyes and ears allow them to echolocate for food. This is an amazing survival strategy, as these features help the bats use sound waves to determine the location, distance, and movement of other animals, so that they can capture the ones they like to eat. In order to survive during the day, Bats have to live off insects and fruit that are available. They find their food by sensing the smells of the food and by following the vibrations from it. So, they spend their entire lives in the dark holes called “caves,” and the sound waves they use to find the food are called “echolocation.” Bats also can sense vibrations. At night, Bats will sleep in the coolest parts of the caves. Some of their food comes during this time, along with any insect or fruit they can find. Also, during the day, Bats sleep and use their fat reserves to survive until the next night. Even when they can’t find food, they use their fat deposits to survive. Why do Bats live in caves? No one really knows why Bats live in caves because the Bats themselves don’t really care why they’re there. They just want to live. Do Bats make more babies in the winter? Bats usually give birth to a single baby. But, there have been some bats that have had twins. Does Bats ever fly? Although bats are able to fly, they usually only do so when they are flying What's New in the? FDA Just Proposed A Ban On Energy Drinks, Where Do We Go From Here? Enlarge this image toggle caption iStockphoto.com iStockphoto.com Updated at 9:47 p.m. ET It was a head-shaking move, in effect banning caffeine-infused beverages, all based on a single study conducted in a lab. The Food and Drug Administration announced last week it would outlaw energy drinks in a public comment period, warning that they might be "detrimental to health" because they contain excessive amounts of caffeine, sugar, and other stimulants. At issue is one study conducted at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. The authors analyzed postmortem brain samples from 12 children who had died suddenly. They found caffeine levels were "greater than 5 times" the amounts seen in normal tissues. The children had a median blood caffeine level of 27.9 milligrams per liter, versus 9.2 milligrams per liter in adults who drink less than three cups of coffee per day. The study is published online in the journal JAMA Pediatrics and will soon be published in the print edition. In a statement, Cincinnati Children's says it is "completely confident" in the study's findings. But the makers of the drinks, according to an FDA-commissioned research study, have produced other evidence. These companies also call the study an outlier. And while that study was cited in the FDA's draft proposal, some academic medical scientists consider it irrelevant to the pending rule. James Todd, a neuroscientist at the University of Missouri School of Medicine and editor of a supplement of JAMA Pediatrics that appeared on the heels of the paper, says the children's samples were drawn more than 40 years ago. "There are a lot of other studies out there that indicate caffeine doesn't go anywhere near your brain," Todd says. Caffeine is contained in more than 300 brands of energy drinks, including Gatorade. It is a weight loss supplement and sports drink. There is also considerable disagreement on how much caffeine gets to the brain and what effects it has, Todd says. "The question of whether caffeine is safe is probably not the question we need to ask ourselves," says Todd. "It may be the question we need to answer — but we don't have enough evidence." FDA spokesman Eric Pahon says the agency is basing its rules on the "science, not the System Requirements: A computer running Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10 with at least 4GB of RAM and an Intel i3-2120 or equivalent processor A GeForce GTX 1080 or equivalent graphics card A computer with at least 4GB of RAM A computer running Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10 with at least 4GB of RAM and an Intel i3-2120 or equivalent processorA GeForce GTX 1080 or equivalent graphics cardA computer with at least 4GB of RAM Best of luck to all those enjoying the game, and I hope you have
