Pages Thursday, July 18, 2012 The Lore of Science Fiction The use of the term "science fiction" to describe works of fiction is an interesting thing, with a history that goes back all the way to the mid 19th century. Where the term came from is still not entirely clear, but the idea that science fiction is a genre of fiction seems to be based on the idea that they are stories that draw on imagined science in a way that allows them to push the boundaries of what is 'plausible'. What's more interesting is that, since these stories are imaginative, their use in the future of the future is the subject of endless speculation. This has lead to some rather odd ideas, and most importantly to the idea that scientific achievements don't always stay scientific. Whether they're going to explore the idea that controlling minds is possible, or the idea that genetic engineering is possible. So let's explore some of these more speculative ideas. Eternal Life It's a really obvious one, but one often discussed. Just like Shakespeare is often used to predict science, literature was used to predict science. In the novels of H.G. Wells, he explores whether technologies could overcome death, whether that would result in a new kind of immortality, or if it would simply result in a new kind of hell. Other writers, in particular Arthur C. Clarke, looked into the idea of being uploaded to a machine, or even of entire species being uploaded. Usually, though, it's linked to immortality, although there are also ideas of others being uploaded to allow a single consciousness to be preserved. Controlling Minds Another very obvious link to science is the idea that technology could control the human mind. In novels from Wells to Greg Egan, scientific or philosophical advances are used to control the minds of other humans. A couple of examples of that are The Time Machine (1895) and A Mind Forever Voyaging (1993). The idea of mind control is very much based on the idea that this could eventually be used for good, such as creating an all-seeing computer, or being able to control emotions so that it becomes easier to control the masses (as William Gibson explores in Neuromancer (1984)). However, it can also be used for evil. George Orwell is most famous for exploring how political control could use control of the media, but he also explores the possibility of controlling minds in 1984.
