History Early years (1905–1966) In 1905, rugby union's Northern Union split from the Rugby Football Union (RFU) and its amateur ethos. The following year, Widnes RFC was formed to provide a more professional club for rugby league to their strong club in nearby Widnes. A meeting of players from Widnes RFC, Penrith Rovers and Leigh Riots was held in December 1905 at the Ferrybridge Hotel in Leigh, and on 14 January 1906 the Widnes Rugby League Football Club was founded. Amongst the founding club members were the Hatherley brothers (Harry and Albert), Cliff Bowen, Dai Lloyd, George Redfern, John Farrell, Charlie Cooke, Jimmy Kelly and the Robinson brothers (Frank, Bob and Alf). The name "Widnes Vikings" came from a rugby league scout called W. James, who thought that they were like Viking berserkers, and a native of Widnes called F. The team was called "Widnes FC" from their formation but due to a family dispute with this name in the early 20th century, they changed the name to "Widnes Vikings" in 1926. After five seasons at the Athletic Ground in Blundellsands, the Vikings moved to a rented ground in the Baltic Yard in the 'Shipyard Ground' at West View (now named the Bridgewater Ground), where the ground had the second biggest stand in the Super League behind Bramley. In 1971, the club played its first game at its current ground at the Strand, Widnes on 4 July 1971. The first game at the ground was against the Bradford Northern in the 1971–72 Yorkshire Cup. The club moved to the new ground the following year.
