Photoshop allows you to open a multilayer image in both a _single-layer image_ (as shown in Figure 8-1) and a _multilayer image_ (as shown in Figure 8-2). As long as you are consistent and careful, you can add or remove layers and edit the color and other attributes of those layers as needed. Layers can contain any type of information that you want to use within your images. They include image layers, text layers, and such special effects elements as 3D-like shadows and other transitions effects. Keep in mind that you can always open a new image window from your image window; however, to change the number of layers in an image window, you must first close the image window and reopen it. You can minimize the number of layers in a given image (or close them down to eliminate them entirely) in order to perform other tasks, such as composite and print multiple copies from the same image, or change the image's color balance and other settings.
